Happy hump day! How's everyone's week going so far? I (sorta) slept in today because I decided my body needed a nice rest day considering I'm still sore from running over the weekend. Hamstrings, man. And by sleeping in, I mean just til 7am...but that counts considering it's a work day, yes?
Anyways, we're off to a good start! If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my post yesterday that mentioned I started my training that morning to become a certified intuitive eating counselor. If not, now you know! And I'm super excited about it, guys.
I've used the term around the blog before, as well as in my social media posts, so it may sound familiar. For those of you unfamiliar with what the heck I'm talking about, intuitive eating is an evidence-based approach to developing a healthy relationship with food, as well as your mind and body. It was developed by two registered dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, who wrote a book of the same name which lays out their concept, including the 10 principles behind it. In a nutshell, it's a way of eating that relies on listening to and respecting your body and your sincere hunger cues, and eliminating all food rules. SO, you eat when and how and what you want or need any time, keeping your satisfaction and hunger top of mind, and being attuned to your emotional response.
Now, obviously I'm not an expert in this (I just started the training yesterday), but that's my summary from my own research and the book. And as a friendly reminder (again), I'm not a registered dietitian, nor am I a doctor or a nurse or anything remotely related to something with a medical license. YAY.
Back to intuitive eating. It's basically the conductor of the anti-diet train. The culture we live in has made diets as common as sliced bread (or gluten free sliced bread now?), so much so that we don't even realize that so many of the diets out there even ARE indeed diets (like Paleo, for instance). Anything that cuts out a food group or assigns guilt to a food or ingredient (and isn't medically mandated for your health from a legitimate physician/medical provider) is a diet.
I've known about and been digging the intuitive eating approach for over a year or so, and have just gotten increasingly passionate about it. As a result, it began to feel very important to me to be able to speak more authoritatively about it, and weave it into my writing (here and freelance), and potentially even my career down the road. Since I'm old school, going down the path for an official certification to be an intuitive eating counselor seemed like the right step forward.
To be honest, I wavered slightly because I wasn't sure if it made sense, logically, to do a training like this when my current full-time job, though a health communications role, is not specifically connected to nutrition education. I was leaning very heavily toward it, and realized the doubt monsters I was hearing more stemmed from what it might seem like on the outside to others, like a waste of money or time. How silly, right? It took some reaffirmation from my mama to get me to (literally) get out of bed one night last week and register for part one of this three part training.
And I'm oh so glad I did.
I've seen this quote before, and maybe you have to, that says we must start before we're ready... and gosh, do I agree! I really don't know where this training will lead me. Maybe it'll continue to be something that I weave into my part-time roles as yoga teacher and my writing career outside of my day job. Or maybe it will it will just serve to further my own personal knowledge.
I have also thought for years (seriously, years) about further education in nutrition toward the means of doing a complete career transition, mainly because I'm so interested in it and am drawn to writing/talking about it so much. But with recent/current life changes, like the move to Los Angeles, my career tract is looking a bit more fluid and I'm not sure what the next few years will or should look like.
Am I making sense?
I'm thinking if nothing else, this is an exciting learning opportunity, which may or may not spark a larger career transformation (whether that's just in the form of my freelance writing career, or my overall day job/profession).
Fuzzy-ish sounding, but that is okay.
It just means, I/you/we kinda, sorta HAVE to start before being ready, no? It'll come, that clarity. I believe it.
All that being said, you should expect I'll be sharing insight on intuitive eating throughout this training journey, as well as more honest conversations about health and wellness and nutrition and reflections on diet culture...all from my current seat at the table (aka a writer and fitness/nutrition lover and yoga teacher -not as an RD or medical professional). Hopefully you don't mind!
